Sri Lanka labour discipline, productivity regional concerns
18 Nov, 2011 10:12:48
Nov 18, 2011 (LBO) - Labour productivity and discipline were among issues taken up by businessmen in Sri Lanka's southern Hambantota region during a recent meeting with the Employers’ Federation of Ceylon.
The move followed the signing of an agreement between the EFC and the regional chambers of Hambantota and northern Jaffna to provide the organisation's services for rural entrepreneurs.

Hambantota’s businesses took up issues like labour productivity, disciplining staff and staff attendance and attrition with the panel of IFC experts at last week's meeting, a statement said.

District Chamber of Commerce of Hambantota director Suresh de Mel said their members hope to draw IFC advise on labour law and employment issues.

"Most businesses in this region are structured very informally," he said.

"Many don’t pay PF/ETF (pension fund) taxes. By affiliating themselves with the EFC they can clean up their act and learn how to employ people in the proper manner."
